Bridgewater Knocks Out Bridgewater with a 5-3 Victory

LYNCHBURG , VA –  The Eagles of Bridgewater moved into the championship round of the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament with a 5-3 win over Hampden-Sydney.

Bridgewater (29-11-1) scored three runs in the third inning when Matt Steele led off the inning with a single, moved to third on a double by Jono Brooks and scored when the relay throw was misplayed.  Zach Foltz knocked in Brooks with a single and came around himself on a two-out RBI by Ricky Read.

The Tigers cut the lead to 3-2 in the home-half of the third inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chris Padgett and an RBI single by John Apperson.

HSC (23-16) knotted the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning when John Schoenholtz opened the frame with a walk, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Michael and scored on a RBI by Luke Brankley.

Bridgewater regained the lead in the top-half of the fifth inning when they loaded the bases and Bryan Saunders scored on a fielder’s choice by Matt Johnson to go up 4-3.

BC tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning when Chance Dobbs delivered a two-out singe to score Read and make the score 5-4.

Nolan Shaffer picked up the win after going six innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out six to up his record to 3-5 on the season.

Shaun Brinkley closed out the game with three innings of scoreless relief while striking out five to garner his third save. 

Michael Hall took the loss for Hampden-Sydney after pitching 3.1 innings of relief, two runs and six hits.  He drops to 3-1 on the season.

Bridgewater will face Virginia Wesleyan Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
