HANKY PITCHES BASEBALL TIGERS TO 9-2 ODAC TOURNEY WIN OVER GUILFORD

SALEM , VA — Hampden-Sydney College junior pitcher Jayson Hanky tossed eight and two-third innings and allowed just seven hits and one earned run en route to leading the sixth-seeded Tigers to a 9-2 victory over third-seeded Guilford College in the 2005 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Salem Memorial Stadium Friday evening. With the win, the Tigers improve to 22-13 overall, while the Quakers’ (24-15) become the second team to be eliminated from tournament contention.

Hanky’s performance fell just shy of a complete game after rain halted the contest for three hours and 22 minutes with one out in the top of the ninth inning and the Quakers at bat. However, the Tigers victory was all but sealed thanks to Hanky’s pitching and timely hitting by senior’s Mike Clark and Joe Knowles who combined for five hits and five RBI to lead the Tigers into the tournament semifinals for the second straight season.

Guilford took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Phillip Drew’s RBI grounder that scored Josh Miller. The Tigers countered with three in their portion of the first on RBI hits by Clark and Knowles, while Clark scored a run of his own on a throwing error by the Quakers.

Guilford cut the Tiger advantage to one run, 3-2, in the second as the Quakers took advantage of two Hampden-Sydney errors which led to centerfielder Fred Parent’s run. Hampden-Sydney added two more runs in the bottom of the third as Clark and Knowles again had RBI hits. Leading, 5-2, the Tigers added three more in their half of the fourth as Jay Lilley scored on a Quaker throwing error, while Mike Clark’s third hit of the game drove in Todd Harrell and Jason Bour doubled off the right field wall to plate Chris Padgett.

The Tigers added their final run in the fifth on an RBI double by Luke Brankley, while Hanky settled into a groove on the mound, retiring 11 straight Quakers before the rain delay.

Guilford ’s Logan Collier took the loss after working three innings and allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out one. Adam Comstock came on in relief of Collier and worked five innings, allowing three runs and six hits while striking out two and walking two.

Hampden-Sydney will play the winner of Friday’s nightcap contest between fifth seeded Washington and Lee and fourth seeded Virginia Wesleyan at 11 am Saturday. A win Saturday would put the Tigers in Sunday’s championship game at 1 pm, while a loss Saturday morning would put the Tigers in Saturday’s 7 pm elimination game.
