Seven ODAC Swimming Records Broken at ODAC Championships
Randolph-Macon’s Ewalt Named Swimmer of the Year
Salem, Va.—
Washington and Lee University won the 2004 ODAC Women’s Swimming Championships this past weekend at
Radford University. The Generals tallied 557 points to outdistance Randolph-Macon College by 37 points. Randolph-Macon Woman’s College finished in third place (336) followed by Hollins in fourth (189) and Sweet
Briar in fifth (180).
Randolph-Macon’s Erin Ewalt (Reisterstown, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) was named the ODAC Swimmer of the Year, while teammate Katie Duff (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) was honored as Freshman of the Year. Randolph-Macon Woman’s College Head Coach Donna Hodgert was named Coach of the Year by her peers. Wildcat senior Lourdes Cuellar (Asuncion, Paraguay) was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A sophomore, Ewalt was
part of four ODAC records broken this weekend. She was a member of the 400 medley relay team which
finished in 4:02.02, the 200 medley relay team which finished in a league record 1:53.10, the 400 free relay which broke the ODAC record with a time
of 3:39.81 and also broke her own ODAC record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:38.95.
Duff broke another ODAC record in the meet, finishing the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.29 to break the record held by
Katie Kennedy of Washington and Lee set in 2000. Kennedy recorded a time of 1:09.23.
Coach Hodgert led her Wildcats’ team to a 10-2 dual meet record this season as well as a fourth place finish in the
Randolph-Macon Invitational in early December. Wildcat senior Lourdes Cuellar was chosen by the
conference’s Sports Information Directors as the Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Cuellar
has a 3.965 cumulative GPA while majoring in Spanish and minoring in French. She has set seven school
records this season and was named to the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District team least season.
