HSC’S Ricca Named a National Offensive Player of the
Week
Hampden-Sydney sophomore quarterback JD Ricca (Gaithersburg, MD/St. John’s) has been named one of five Division III National Offensive Players of the Week by Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette after a record-breaking performance in the Tigers’ 54-41 victory over Emory and Henry Saturday.
Ricca completed 27-of-40 passes for a Hampden-Sydney-record 476 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers racked up a program-record 714 yards of offense. All three of Ricca’s TD passes came in the first half as he hit fellow sophomore Brian Rolander for 74 and 42-yard scoring plays and junior CW Clemmons on a 67-yard scoring play.
The 476 yards were the most-ever for a Tiger quarterback, surpassing Mac Russell’s record of 462 logged against Bridgewater in 2001. All together, Ricca rolled up 517 yards of total offense thanks to 41 yards rushing on three carries.
For the season, Ricca leads the ODAC and ranks in the top-ten nationally as he has completed 118-of-185 passes for 1,639 yards and 11 TDs for an efficiency rating of 149.18.
