R-MC's Johnsen Earns Scholar-Athlete Award

Yellow Jackets Women's Lacrosse Player Tabbed for ODAC/Farm Bureau Honor

FOREST, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College women’s lacrosse player, Rachel Johnsen, is one of 10 student-athletes from Old Dominion Athletic Conference member schools to earn a 2012 ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award during the spring athletic schedule.  Johnsen was tabbed from a pool of nominees by a vote of each of the conference's sports information directors.

The ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar Athlete Award is given to a student-athlete in each of the conference's 22 sponsored sports.  Farm Bureau Insurance of Virginia is the presenter of each of the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Awards, forming a partnership with the ODAC to emphasize the NCAA Division III philosophy of the complete student-athlete experience.  To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore standing and have spent at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, must maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, and must have participated in at least 50-percent of the team's events as a starter or key contributor.

Johnsen, a junior from Laurel, Md., shined both on and off the field for Randolph-Macon.  In the classroom, she maintains a 3.89 grade point average as a double major in Political Science and French.  She is a member of several honor societies including Pi Sigma Alpha (political science), Pi Delta Phi (French), Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership) and Gamma Sigma Alpha (Greek academic).  The R-MC honors program participant is a multiple Dean’s List honoree and a two-time member of the All-ODAC Academic Team.

On the field, Johnsen collected 25 points on 16 goals and nine assists.  She was second in the ODAC with 56 ground balls and third with 72 draw controls.  She also caused 28 turnovers on the way to All-ODAC Third Team honors.

"We are proud of the accomplishments of every one of our student-athletes," says ODAC commissioner Brad Bankston. "It is especially gratifying to be able to recognize those who personify the definition of ‘student-athlete' through these awards, and we are proud to be affiliated with Farm Bureau Insurance in this program."
