ODAC Football Report: Week 9

Emory & Henry, Guilford Post First ODAC Wins
Guilford College headlined the ninth week of football action by
picking up its first conference win of the 2009 season. The
Quakers turned back Randolph-Macon College, 20-13, in
Greensboro. Emory & Henry College also recorded its first
league win of the year with a 13-10 win at Catholic
University. Bridgewater College and Washington and Lee
University went to overtime in their contest, with the Eagles
coming out on top 35-34.
Guilford switched gears from the run-heavy and balanced attacks it
had shown in previous weeks to a pass-dominated offense.
Quarterback Billy Watkins completed 35-of-52 passes for 378 yards
and a pair of touchdowns to lead the offense. Four receivers
had at least seven catches with Jon McKinney and Mike Williams
hauling in touchdown passes. Richie Paul led the defense with
his second straight 18-tackle game. He made two stops behind
the line of scrimmage, including a sack, and knocked away a
pass. Randolph-Macon, after enjoying a 6-3 first quarter lead
following two Josh Storm field goals, didn't score again until late
in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne
Jenkins. Thaddeus Scruggs ran for 115 yards. Brandon
Harrison led the defense with eight tackles, two pass break-ups and
a forced fumble.
Emory & Henry got both of its scores from running back Caleb
Jennings. Junior standout, now second in the conference in
rushing yardage (944), ran in from 15 yards to opening the game's
scoring. He later closed the scorebook with a two-yard plunge
to seal the win for the Wasps. Jennings finished the day with
79 yards rushing, with quarterback Drew Piscopo adding 60 more
yards via the ground. Defensively, Wasps recorded
double-digit tackles. C.J. Hodges led the way with 13
stops. For Catholic, Rich Barry continued his strong running
with 152 yards on the ground, the most of any back in the ODAC this
week. Quarterback Dylan Knight threw for 177 yards and ran
for 52 more. John O'Brien accounted for the CUA touchdown
with a four-yard run. Defensively. Avatus Stone led the unit
with 11 tackles. Anthony Albanese and Dwight Jones came away
with sacks.
Bridgewater needed a little extra time to outlast Washington and
Lee on Saturday. A missed field goal by the Generals at
the end of regulation sent the game into overtime. In the
extra session, Bridgewater scored three plays in when Hagan
Driskell hooked up with Beiler, this time from 20 yards out for the
35-28 lead. The two had previously connected on scores of
five and 73 yards. The Generals found paydirt just two plays
into their possession on a one-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Clemo
and then went for two points and the win. Charlie
Westfal's pass was knocked away in the end zone and the Eagles
escaped with the win. Defensively, Tony Konate provided
Bridgewater with one of its scores via a 58-yard interception
return. For Washington and Lee, defensive end Matt Cassilly
made six tackles with five tackles for a loss of 35 yards that
included three sacks for a total of 28 yards lost.
