 Offensive Player of the Week

 Matt Pawlowski| Guilford| Fr.| Quarterback
Pawlowski, a freshman from Greensboro, N.C., helped the Quakers to their first win of the 2012 campaign as he had a hand in four of Guilford's six touchdowns in its 45-35 shootout with Averett University. Pawloski was 18-of-28 passing for 239 yards and three touchdowns, and he added a six-yard touchdown as the game's final score to ice the victory. Pawlowski and receiver Nick Mearite had a strong connection as the pair hooked up for eight catches that covered 125 yards and included two first half touchdowns, one coming on a fourth-and-goal play. His three touchdown passes and 64.3 completion percentage are season-highs for the first-year signal-caller.

 Defensive Player of the Week

Mitchell Thompson| Washington and Lee| Jr.| Def. Back
Thompson, a junior from Memphis, Tenn., helped the Generals to their first win over a ranked opponent since 2010. Thompson spearheaded a Washington and Lee defensive effort that bent but didn't break as the Generals topped 23rd-ranked Centre College, 34-16, on Saturday. Thompson led the unit with 10 tackles, including nine solo stops. The defensive back helped W&L maintain a 21-10 halftime lead when he put the clamps on a fourth down play inside the W&L 25-yard line when he tackled the ball carrier for a one-yard loss with less than a minute to go in the frame. For the season, Thompson is third on the squad with 19 tackles.

Team News and Notes

BRIDGEWATER was idle last week on its scheduled bye week.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Shenandoah University (1-2, 0-0 in the ODAC) - 1:00 p.m.
Bridgewater and Shenandoah are meeting for the 15th time with BC holding a 12-2 advantage in a series that began in 1932.  Saturday's contest also marks the first football game in ODAC play since becoming the conference's 14th full-time member in July.  The Eagles have won three straight games in the series, including a 28-23 decision in 2011.  In that game, BC ran for 258 yards powered by a 186-yard three-touchdown day from Darrin McKenzie.  SU quarterback Daniel Wright was just as good, throwing for 293 yards resulting in a pair of 100-yard receiving performances from Rico Wallace and Qiydaar Murphy.  Shenandoah's last win in the series was a 10-6 decision in 2008.

CATHOLIC dropped its road opener on Friday evening, falling at Carnegie Mellon 35-17.  Running back Mike Pitsenberger rushed for 127 yards on only 13 carries Friday evening at Carnegie Mellon. The 127 yards are the second most Pitsenberger has rushed for, second only to a 186-yard performance vs. Hampden-Sydney in 2010. Pitsenberger averaged nearly 10 yards per carry (9.8) with a long of 27. He gained 81 yards on nine carries in the 1st half and 46 on four rushes after halftime.   The Cardinals rushed for a season-high 213 yards, led by Pitsenberger and Nick Cortese (15 carries, 63 yards). CUA trailed the Tartans 14-10 at halftime, before CMU scored 21 straight to break the game open. Conor Stueckler led the Cards defense with 10 stops, including 1.0 for loss. CUA held the Tartans to 0-for-8 on third down and won the time-of-possession battle, 34:40 to 25:20.

NEXT WEEK: Idle
The Cardinals are off next week due to their scheduled bye week.  Catholic returns to the gridiron on Saturday, September 29th when CUA opens league play against Hampden-Sydney College.  Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.

EMORY & HENRY picked up 444 yards on the day with 23 first downs, Saturday afternoon at Fred Selfe Stadium  … The Wasps returned to the air attack as junior quarterback Kyle Boden threw for 364 yards on 35-for-51 passing with two touchdowns and one interception … The 444 yards of offense by the Wasps was the most since the team reeled off 467 yards against Hampden-Sydney a year ago ... Emory & Henry came out of the halftime break down 20-10 but scored on four straight possessions to open the second half as they went on to win by a 34-20 score.  Emory & Henry’s defense bounced back in the second half to pitch a shutout after allowing 20 first-half points to Methodist … As the Wasp offense was getting on track the defense also forced three straight punts to start the second half as E&H went on a 24-0 run to take the lead, 34-20, early in the fourth quarter … For the game, the defense forced the Monarchs into six three-and-outs … DeMikael Burse led the Wasps with eight tackles a forced fumble and four passes broken up, three of which would have put Methodist in the end zone or well within field goal range … Cole Beyeler had eight stops from his defensive line position including 1.5 for loss … Linebackers Ross Ellis and Paul Forney each had six tackles on the day as well.

NEXT WEEK: Idle
The Wasps are off next week due to their scheduled bye week.  Emory & Henry returns to the gridiron on Saturday, September 29th when E&H opens league play against Randolph-Macon College.  Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in Emory.

GUILFORD quarterback Matt Pawlowski had a hand in four of the Quakers six touchdowns as he fired three touchdown passes and ran in from six yards out for the game’s final score.  He passed for over 200 yards for the second week in a rown, and his three touchdowns and 64.3 completion percentage are tops in his college career.  After making two catches in his first two games, junior transfer Nick Mearite made eight catches for 125 yards and two scores in week three, all career highs for the former UNC Pembroke student... Mike Williams picked up his second 100-yard rushing game, thanks in large part to a career-long 79-yard run in the fourth quarter. Williams finished with 151 yards on 13 carries. His 11.6 yards per carry average ranks second in school history... Guilford's 237 team rushing yards in the game are its most since Nov. 6, 2010... Freshman Tyler Hunt connected on his first college field goal, a 35-yard kick that broke a 35-35 tie midway through the fourth quarter.  Defensive Note: Robert Smith led the Quakers' defenders for the third straight game, registering a game-best 12 tackles. He now has three games with 10 or more tackles, matching his total of a year ago. He becomes first Quaker with three straight double-figure tackling efforts since Richie Paul in 2009. JerMario Gooch picked off his first college interception Saturday to clinch the win over Averett. The theft marked Guilford's fifth in three games. Last season, the Quakers made seven interceptions in the entire season.

NEXT WEEK: Idle
The Quakers are off next week due to their scheduled bye week.  Guilford returns to the gridiron on Saturday, September 29th when GC opens league play against Washington and Lee University.  Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Greensboro.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY was idle last week on its scheduled bye week.

NEXT WEEK: vs. Huntingdon College (2-1 Independent) - 1:00 p.m.
Hampden-Sydney and Huntingdon will be meeting for the fourth time overall and for the second straight season.  In each of the three previous meetings, H-SC and HC combined for at least 55 points.  The Tigers won the first two meetings via 34-21 and 38-34 decisions in 2007 and 2008, respectively.  The Hawks put up their first win last season with a 34-27 triumph in Montgomery, Ala.  Huntingdon enters the contest following a 62-17 thumping of LaGrange this past Saturday.  Hampden-Sydney, idle last week on its scheduled bye week, won its first two outings of the new season.

RANDOLPH-MACON heads into the bye week on a two-game winning streak ahead of opening ODAC play on the 29th at Emory & Henry.   Randolph-Macon running backs Drake Sanders and Will McGhee each ran for over 100 yards on the day as the Yellow Jackets topped visiting Bethany 49-33 on Saturday afternoon.  McGhee ran for 148 yards in win, while Sanders carried the ball 24 times for 116 yards.  The duo helped R-MC rack up 281 yards via the ground.  McGhee finished with 202 all-purpose yards as he caught a pass for 41 yards and had 13 return yards.  The Jackets rushed the ball 53 times, averaging over five yards a carry and helped the offense roll up 510 yards of total offense.  Quarterback Zac Naccarato was an efficient 15-of-18 for 229 yards and four touchdown tosses on the day.    Naccarato completed passes to seven different receivers on Saturday with Vance Hendren and Christian Cook each pulling in a team-best four balls.  Defensively, Danny Hunt led the unit with nine tackles.  Brandon Harrison intercepted his first pass of the season and returned it 32 yards to set up a Yellow Jackets' touchdown.

NEXT WEEK: Idle

The Yellow Jackets are off next week due to their scheduled bye week.  Randolph-Macon returns to the gridiron on Saturday, September 29th when R-MC opens league play against Emory & Henry College.  Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in Emory.

SHENANDOAH and Christopher Newport played in their first non-league contest on Saturday, with CNU coming out on top 20-7.  A pair of SU turnovers led to Captains' touchdowns.  Shenandoah did the majority of its offensive work on the ground as SU ran for 139 yards.  Andrew Smith had 72 yards rushing, powered by a 47-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for SU's lone score.  The Hornets' defense put together a solid day in holding CNU to 213 yards of offense.  Jajuan Johnson led the unit with 13 tackles while Bryon Mitchell and Josh Rogers made 10 stops each.  Rogers' 10-tackle effort moved him into a tie with Cory Giffing '12 for the most double-figure tackle games with 10.  Cornerback Brandon Martin intercepted his third pass of the season, tying him for tops in the ODAC with W&L's Jake Pelton.  Martin has intercepted one pass in each of SU's three games this season.  He had three total interceptions last year.

NEXT WEEK: at Bridgewater (2-0, 0-0 in the ODAC) - 1:00 p.m.

WASHINGTON AND LEE'S win over 23rd-ranked Centre was its first win over a ranked opponent since defeating a 17th-ranked Hampden-Sydney team to win the 2010 ODAC title.  It also improved W&L's home record to 10-1 over the last three seasons.  The Generals missed a PAT attempt in the third quarter, ending their string of consecutive PATs made at 104 straight dating back to the third game of the 2010 season.  The W&L defense allowed Centre to gain 434 yards of offense, but limited the Colonels to just 1-of-4 on fourth down conversions.  On the flip side, the Generals were 3-of-3 on fourth down conversions in the game.  Junior quarterback Nick Lombardo helped lead the Generals to a 34-16 win over No. 23 Centre on Saturday by rushing for 89 yards and passing for 96 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed 19 times for a 4.7 average and completed 5-of-6 passes as the Generals accumulated 434 yards of total offense. For the year, Lombardo has rushed for 183 yards and a touchdown and has completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Senior running back Brett Murray gained 120 yards on the ground on Saturday, becoming the eighth player in school history with better than 2,000 career rushing yards.  He now has 2,091 yards rushing and 4,160 all-purpose yards for his career.  Senior running back Luke Heinsohn rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns in the contest.  He also hit 4-of-5 PAT attempts to move into a third place tie with Chris Sullivan '02 on the school's all-time scoring list with 204 career points.  Mitchell Thompson paced the W&L defensive unit with 10 tackles in the Generals' 34-16 upset of No. 23 Centre on Saturday. Nine of his tackles were solo stops, including a tackle for a loss on a fourth down play at the W&L 25-yardline with less than a minute to go in the first half, preserving a 21-10 lead at the break. For the season, the junior cornerback is tied for third on the team with 19 tackles.

NEXT WEEK: Idle
The Generals are off next week due to their scheduled bye week.  Washington and Lee returns to the gridiron on Saturday, September 29th when W&L opens league play against Guilford College.  Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Greensboro.
