Hornets, Royals to Meet in Finals


Championship Set for Saturday in Lynchburg

SALEM, Va. --- Lynchburg College and Eastern Mennonite University will be meeting in the finals of the ODAC Field Hockey Tournament for the fourth consecutive year on Saturday as the tourney's top two seeds advanced with victories in their semifinal contests.  The Hornets topped Randolph-Macon College, 3-1, while the Royals did the same to Washington and Lee University by the same score.

Lynchburg (16-4) scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Yellow Jackets (11-10).  Meredith Young put R-MC on the board with 10:16 to go in the first half off an assist by Mary McCarthy.  The Jackets carried their advantage into the intermission.

The Hornets got two unassisted goals from Jordan Warrington within the opening 15 minutes of the latter frame.  Her first came 4:01 into the half to tie the game 1-1.  She tallied a second time in the 48th minute, putting LC ahead 2-1.  Allie Weir capped the game's scoring with 0:33 to play.  Shelly Milks assisted on Weir's effort.

In the second semifinal, three of the contest's four goals came in the first half.  Linda Cimini opened the scorebook for the Royals at the 14:43 mark with her seventh goal of the season.  Hailee Rittle assisted on the tally.  Alyssa Derstine made it 2-0 EMU less than four minutes later as she beat the Generals' defense off a feed from Sarah Roth.

Washington and Lee got one back with less than five minutes to play before halftime.  Katherine Price scored unassisted, sending the two foes into the break with EMU leading, 2-1.

The Royals tacked on an insurance goal in the 48th minute.  Katie Cimini notched her fourth goal of the season to cap the game's scoring at 3-1.
