WLU Slips Past FDU-Florham

Keigler Nets Winner with Seconds Remaining
LEXINGTON, Va. --- Washington and Lee junior
attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) netted the
game-winning goal off a feed from senior midfielder Tim Skeen
(Baltimore, Md./Towson) with just 10 seconds remaining in overtime
to lift the sixth-ranked Generals to a 6-5 overtime triumph over
FDU-Florham in the first round of the NCAA Division III men's
lacrosse tournament on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field.
W&L, which tied the school record for victories in a season
(16-3), trailed 5-4 with 4:58 left in regulation when FDU senior
midfielder Jason Koontz (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson) scored
unassisted. The Generals then tied it at 5-5 just 36 seconds later
when senior midfielder Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) scored
man-up off an assist from Keigler. Both teams had several chances
in the overtime period until Keigler tallied the game-winner.
W&L jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter and held a
4-2 lead at the break. The Devils (13-5) scored the lone goal of
the third period on a man-up tally by senior midfielder Peter
Fleming (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) off a feed from first-year
attackman Pat O'Brien (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) at the
6:32 mark. Fleming then scored off a Koontz assist with 9:19 left
in the fourth quarter to tie it at 4-4.
Keigler led W&L with one goal and two assists, while Skeen,
junior midfielder Chris Washington (Flint, Mich./Cranbrook
Kingswood) and sophomore attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix,
Md./Loyola-Blakefield) notched one goal and one assist each. Senior
goalkeeper Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St.
Agnes) was spectacular between the pipes, stopping 12 shots in
63:50 in goal.
Fleming paced FDU-Florham with three goals, while Koontz tallied
one goal and two assists. Junior Alex Kajencki (Medford,
Mass./Xavierian) played the duration in goal for the Devils,
stopping 11 shots.
Washington and Lee advances to face Gettysburg College in an NCAA
Second Round game in Gettysburg, Pa., on Saturday. Opening faceoff
will be at 1:00 pm.
