RC, VWC Ranked Regionally by NCAA

Maroons, Marlins Included in First Report from National Committee

SALEM, Va. --- The NCAA released its first set of regional rankings for the fall team sports (except football) on Wednesday with the ODAC earning solid representation throughout. In men's soccer, Roanoke College sits fifth in the South Atlantic Region, followed closely by ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan College as the sixth-ranked squad.

NCAA Division III men's soccer is comprised of eight regions across the nation. The South Atlantic Region attributed rankings to seven schools in this initial report. Montclair State University (N.J.) currently owns the top spot in the region with Christopher Newport University holding the second position. York College (Pa.) and Emory University are ranked third and fourth, respectively, with the University of Mary Washington rounding out the group as the seventh rated program.

New rankings will be determined each week through the end of conference tournament action. The rankings compiled through the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Committee aid in determining at-large bids into the NCAA postseason tournament.

Since the preseason, regional and national rankings have been conducted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). In those rankings, which are determined through a polling process of a panel of coaches, Lynchburg College holds the ODAC's top billing as the fourth-ranked squad. The Hornets are joined by Roanoke (6th), Virginia Wesleyan (T-7th), and Hampden-Sydney College (9th). Christopher Newport owns the top ranking with Montclair State and York filling out the top three.

In the NSCAA national poll, Lynchburg maintained the #25 ranking for the second straight week. Christopher Newport is the top ranked squad ahead of Ohio Wesleyan University and Messiah College (Pa.).

The ODAC has a strong presence in the NCAA Division III national statistics rankings. Roanoke goalkeeper Ryan Russell is fourth in the nation with a 0.266 goals-against-average. He also ranks eighth in the country with a .909 save percentage. Hampden-Sydney keeper John Robert Plyler is 18th with a 0.483 GAA and 30th with .860 save percentage.

Plyler's efforts have helped Hampden-Sydney to a 0.460 team goals-against-average, good enough for 13th in NCAA Division III. The Tigers are joined by Virginia Wesleyan in a tie for 22nd with a .600 shutout percentage. The Marlins' high-profile offense has garnered a high national rank, showing up 16th with a 3.07 scoring average.
