Eagles Knock Off Emory in 11 Innings

Rees Singles in Winning Run

SALISBURY, Md. --- Hillary Rees singled in the winning run in the top of the 11th inning Saturday to lift the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Emory University.

Emory will now face Salisbury on Sunday at noon with the winner facing the Eagles for the championship and the right to advance to the NCAA National Championship tournament at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J. featuring the final eight teams.

The Eagles took the lead in the top of the sixth. Kaitlyn Bowman doubled and moved to third on a fly ball to right by Lauren Childress. Bowman scored on Elizabeth Smith's groundout, giving BC a 1-0 lead.

The lead didn't last long as Emory answered with the tying run in the bottom of the inning. The teams traded zeroes on the scoreboard until the 11th. Smith led off the inning with a single and pinch-runner Kristen Combs moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Rutledge. With two outs, Rees blooped a single to center to score the winning run.

Lindsay Lam, who started the game and pitched into the sixth inning, re-entered the game in the 11th and retired Emory in order to preserve the victory.

Lam pitched a total of six inning and allowed just five hits and one earned run and was credited with the save. Ashley Gills pitched five shutout innings, allowing just one hit to pick up her third victory of the tournament and her second of the day.
