Former Mary Washington All-American Heads to Ashland
ASHLAND, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College
Director of Athletics, Jeff Burns, announced on Wednesday that
former University of Mary Washington All-American, Caitlin
Erickson, has been named the new Head Women's Lacrosse Coach at
R-MC.
Erickson arrives in Ashland after a two-year stint as an assistant
coach with her alma mater. Erickson helped lead the Eagles to 28
wins over her two years on the sidelines in Fredericksburg. The
2009 squad won the Capital Athletic Conference Championship,
advanced to the third-round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the
season ranked 12th in the Nation.
In 2008, UMW posted 14 wins, advanced to the second round of the
NCAA Tournament, and was ranked 18th in the Nation at the close of
the season.
"I believe Caitlin is a perfect fit for the lacrosse program and
the R-MC community as a whole," said Burns. "Her success on the
field and in the classroom, as well as her experience as an
assistant under UMW Head Coach, Dana Hall, will prove to be vital
as she looks to lead the program to an ODAC title, the NCAA
Tournament and most importantly, producing positive experiences and
quality student-athletes here at Randolph-Macon."
Erickson was involved in all aspects of the UMW program, including
on the field instruction as well as practice preparation. Erickson
also spearheaded all recruiting efforts for Mary Washington as well
as organizing the team's strength and conditioning program and
fundraising efforts.
Erickson joined Dana Hall's staff in 2008 after completing one of
the most brilliant careers in school history. She is the Mary
Washington career leader in points (303) and assists (124), while
being the single season record holder in points with 143, and
assists with 81. Erickson also holds single game records for
assists (10) and points (14).
"I'm extremely honored to be the next women's lacrosse coach at
Randolph-Macon College," said Erickson. "I want to thank President
Lindgren, Provost Franz and Director of Athletics Jeff Burns for
giving me this opportunity. I would also like to thank Mary
Washington head coach, Dana Hall, for first teaching and mentoring
me as a player and then as a coach. R-MC has a rich tradition and I
am very excited to be a part of the future of the women's lacrosse
program."
A two-time All-CAC choice and All-Region selection, Erickson
was a consensus All-American in 2008 after she led the
nation in assists per game and points per game as a senior,
breaking the NCAA Division III record for points per game with
7.94. Erickson helped UMW to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2006
and 2007.
In addition to her lacrosse duties, Erickson also served as an
assistant coach for the field hockey program since 2008. The Eagles
have won 34 games in her two plus seasons.
Originally from Texas, Erickson graduated from Mary Washington
with a degree in business administration and is currently pursuing
her MBA at her alma mater.
Erickson will inherit a Jackets team that went 8-6 in 2009 and
advanced to the ODAC Tournament Semifinals.
