Joines W&L from UC-Santa Cruz
LEXINGTON, Va. --- Washington and Lee
University Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced the
appointment of Erin Ness as head women's tennis coach and assistant
director of the Duchossois Tennis Center effective immediately.
"It is with great pleasure that I welcome Erin Ness to W&L as
our head coach of women's tennis," said Hathorn. "Erin was
selected from a strong pool of applicants because of her
demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and coaching at the
Division III level. Her work ethic, passion for the game,
belief in the educational aspect of sport, and her understanding of
the role that academics plays in the life of our student-athletes
made her a natural fit for this position. I am looking
forward to welcoming Erin to campus and assisting her as she begins
her leadership of our women's tennis program."
Ness comes to Washington and Lee from the University of
California-Santa Cruz, where she served as the head women's tennis
coach for the last six seasons. She led the Banana Slugs to
the NCAA Division III Tournament three times, while mentoring her
athletes to All-America honors a total of five times. Her
2008, 2011 and 2012 teams all earned Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA) All-Academic Team accolades and she was named the
Wilson/ITA West Region Coach of the Year in 2011.
"I am excited to be joining the Washington and Lee community and I
am grateful to Jan Hathorn for providing me with this opportunity,"
said Ness. "I'm looking forward to carrying on the tradition
of success forged by the Generals' women's tennis program."
In addition to coaching, Ness served as a physical education
instructor at UC-Santa Cruz and served as the assistant director of
the Nike Tennis Camps held on campus since 2004.
Ness was a four-year starter in both singles and doubles as an
undergraduate at UC-Santa Cruz, serving as a team captain for her
senior season. Twice she helped guide the team to the NCAA
Tournament and she was a regionally ranked doubles player.
Ness earned a bachelor of arts in psychology in 2006 and is
currently working towards a master of arts in kinesiology and
sports psychology from San Jose State University.
