Below you will find sample sportsmanship codes and statements that vary from the NCAA approved version typically read by members schools in the ODAC. Per the December 2004 meeting, the Board of Directors has allowed schools to draft its own statement to be read prior to contests on campus and placed in each sport's printed program.

CCIW

In response to your request, I am attaching the sportsmanship statement that was developed by our faculty athletic representatives.  The faculty athletic representatives studied this issue two years ago, resulting in a great deal of campus discussion and awareness.    I feel that CCIW sportsmanship has improved greatly since the study.  Also attached to the statement is a sample of the announcement read before games.   A sportsmanship statement is also used in all publications from the individual schools.

Here it is:

Sportsmanship Statement

The following statement has been prepared by the Faculty Athletic Representatives to be used by the conference:

THE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES OF THE CCIW BELIEVE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP IS AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE COMPETITION.  WE WHOLEHEARTEDLY EMBRACE THE NCAA POSITION THAT IN ORDER FOR GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP TO PREVAIL, COACHES, STUDENT-ATHLETES, AND FANS MUST DISPLAY RESPECT, FAIRNESS, CIVILITY, HONESTY, AND RESPONSIBILITY BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER ALL ATHLETIC CONTESTS.  WE ENCOURAGE FANS TO ENTHUSIASTICALLY SUPPORT THEIR TEAM, RECOGNIZE THE OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF OPPONENTS, AND ALWAYS EXHIBIT GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP IN THEIR WORDS AND ACTIONS.

It is the hope of the group that this statement can help convey the importance that our conference places on sportsmanship and that it will be used on all programs and other appropriate publications.  Combined with the following sample of a pre-game announcement most of our schools are using, we are making a stand against poor sportsmanship.

THE COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS AND WISCONSIN ENCOURAGES AND PROMOTES SPORTSMANSHIP BY STUDENT-ATHLETES, COACHES, AND SPECTATORS.  PROFANITY, RACIAL OR ETHICAL COMMENTS OR OTHER INTIMIDATING ACTIONS DIRECTED AT OFFICIALS, STUDENT-ATHLETES, COACHES OR TEAM REPRESENTATIVES WILL NOT BE TOLERATED AND ARE GROUNDS FOR REMOVAL FROM THE SIGHT OF THE COMPETION.

Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association

I've attached a copy of our "statement" which I think was originally adapted from the NCAA statement.  The second part - reference to tournaments - was a policy to handle signs, noise makers etc.  (It's scanned so I hope it comes out OK.

Crowd Control Statement

Regular Season Competition

The following statement is to be published as appropriate by MlAA member colleges in programs and other materials distributed at athletic events. The public address announcer as deemed necessary by each college's athletics director, prior to any athletic contest involving MIAA members should also read this statement. The MlAA Presidents have asked that this statement be read at each home contest.

"The MlAA encourages and promotes good sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches and spectators. We request your cooperation by supporting the participants and officials in a positive manner. Profanity, racial, ethnic or sexual comments, or other intimidating actions will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from the site of competition. Also, consumption or possession of alcoholic beverages is prohibited."

MlAA Tournament Championship Events

MlAA crowd control policies for tournament and or championship events shall be those policies

stated in each respective NCAA sport championship handbook. These policies should be printed on the championship program where appropriate and read by the public address announcer .

Southern California

The SCIAC has developed the following as more of a visual reminder
(bulletin boards, locker rooms, etc.) than a verbal one.
It is the responsibility of each conference member institution to ensure
that:

* The conduct before, during and after competition of all those
representing the participating institutions personifies the highest
standards of behavior traditional to intercollegiate athletics.
* Competition is conducted in a nondiscriminatory manner that
encourages enthusiastic support within the confines of good sportsmanship
and fosters a positive attitude among spectators and participants in support
of their teams
* Coaches and student-athletes abide by the letter and spirit of the
playing rules and shall be responsible for conducting themselves in an
honest and sportsmanlike fashion at all times "so that intercollegiate
athletics as a whole, their institutions, and they, as individuals, shall
represent the honor and dignity of fair play and the generally recognized
high standards associated with wholesome competitive sports."
* Coaches are in control of their players at all times in order to
prevent any unsportsmanlike act toward opponents, officials, or spectators.
