BC's Mills, LC's Stanton Win ODAC Cross Country Titles

Washington and Lee, Lynchburg Capture Team Championships

Lynchburg College and Washington and Lee University split the 2012 ODAC Cross Country Championship races on Saturday at Peakview Elementary and Burtner Farm in Penn Laird, Va.  The Hornets came out on top in the men's 8K race, while the Generals earned #1 billing through the women's 6K chase.  Lynchburg’s Cody Stanton garnered the individual men's title, earning him the ODAC Men's Runner of the Year award, while Bridgewater's Olivia Mills earned her second straight ODAC Women's Runner of the Year accolade after capturing the women’s individual title.

The top-14 finishers for both the men and women earn All-ODAC honors.  The first seven receive All-ODAC First Team laurels, while the second seven garner All-ODAC Second Team recognition.

On the men's side, the Hornets finished atop the standings with 28 points, while the second-place team, Bridgewater College, posted 57 tallies.  The next three spots were separated by just three points.  Roanoke College earned the third ranking with 134 points, followed by Guilford College (136) in fourth, and Washington and Lee (137) in the fifth position.  Eastern Mennonite University (146) placed just nine points behind W&L in sixth place, followed by Shenandoah University (206), Virginia Wesleyan College (209), Hampden-Sydney College (233), Emory & Henry College (243), and Randolph College (253), sequentially. 

The Hornets had five runners place in the top-14 and were paced by Stanton’s winning time of 26:16.11.  Lawrence Minor (26:43.01, 3rd), Nolan Compton (26:53.09, 5th), Anthony McBride (26:59.77, 7th), and Evan Parry (27:42.54, 12th) all scored for LC.  Bridgewater and Guilford each had three runners place in the top-14.  BC’s Luke Sohl led the Eagles as he crossed the finish line in 26:31.66 for a second place mark.  Matt Denlinger placed 11th in a time of 27:41.69, while Ryan Speray crossed the finish line in 27:44.61 for a 13th-place nod.  The Quakers were led by Andris Goncarovs, who ran the course in 26:44.21 to finish in fourth place.  Chad Norton (27:01.49, 8th) and David Cason (27:21.90, 9th) also scored for GC. 

Other notable men’s individual finishers include the 2011 individual winner, Tim Smith from Roanoke, who crossed the tape in 27:27.88 for a 10th-place finish.  RC’s Harrison Toney also scored for the Maroons (27:48.36, 14th), while EMU’s Dan Nafziger placed sixth with a time of 26:55.07.

On the women’s side, the Generals placed first with 29 total points.  Bridgewater finished in second with 51 markers, followed by Lynchburg (85), Eastern Mennonite (92), Virginia Wesleyan (133), Roanoke (137), Shenandoah (198), Guilford (228), and Randolph (257), respectively.

Mills and her winning time of 23:07.83 was joined by All-ODAC teammates Kaylee Kubisiak (23:17.58, 2nd), Whitney Fitzgerald (24:32.23, 10th) and Zanny Ludtke (24:55.90, 14th).  Washington and Lee placed five runners in the top-14 and was led by Lauren Schultz’s third place finish (23:39.57).  Molly Ortiz (23:46.68, 4th) and Casey Mackintosh (24:06.15, 5th) joined her on the All-ODAC First Team.  Brandie Huffman (24:20.90, 8th) and Annelise Madison (24:31.61, 9th) also notched All-ODAC Second Team laurels for W&L.

Eastern Mennonite and Lynchburg both had two runners apiece in the top-14.  EMU’s Hannah Chappell-Dick (24:07.52) recorded a sixth-place mark, while Allison Eanes crossed the finish line in 24:50.95 for a 13th-place nod.  Kiley Trennepohl (24:13.85, 7th) and Ashley Saba (24:43.41, 12th) scored for the Hornets, while RC’s Grace England crossed the finish line in 24:32.69 for an 11th-place finish. 

Lynchburg's Doug Thomasey was tabbed the men's ODAC Coach of the Year for the third straight year, while Washington and Lee head coach Kris Hoey garnered the women's ODAC Coach of the Year accolade.

The Eagles’ Denlinger was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year, while Bridgewater’s Kubisiak collected the honor on the women's side.

Virginia Wesleyan’s Darren Driscoll was selected as the men's ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Washington and Lee’s Schultz earned the women's laurel for the second-straight season.
