ODAC Basketball Players Honored by VaSID
Call, Silva Named Players of the Year

 

Emory & Henry College All-American Justin Call has been selected as Player of the Year, and Virginia Union University head coach Dave Robbins is the Coach of the Year, in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) for the 2004 College Division All-State Men's Basketball Team. 

       

Call, a 6-3 senior guard from Ronda, N.C., averaged 24.8 points and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 49% from the field, including 44% on three-point field goals (73), and 87% at the free throw line.  He led E&H to a 17-10 record while being named NABC Division III 1st-Team All-America.  Call was also awarded the Jostens Trophy Division III Player of the Year, was named the ODAC Player of the Year and Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as well as earning Academic All-America College Division 1st-Team honors.
      

Robbins led Virginia Union to a 25-4 record and into the Division II National Tournament after the Panthers won the CIAA Tournament championship.  He has complied a career record of 609-168 through 26 years at Union, a winning percentage of .784 percent.
 

Joining Call on the VaSID 1st-Team were Division III Bridgewater junior Ricky Easterling, Division III Hampden-Sydney senior Jeff Monroe, Division III Shenandoah junior Chris Rhone, and Division III Randolph-Macon sophomore Justin Wansley.  Easterling averaged 19.3 points and 3.6 rebounds for the Eagles (13-13).  Monroe scored 17.6 points along with 4.2 rebounds for the Tigers (25-5).  Rhone averaged 19.9 points and 5.1 rebounds for the Hornets (16-10).  Wansley posted 15.3 points and 7.8 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (23-5).  Call was a first-team pick last year, while Easterling and Monroe were each second-team selections in 2003.
     

The VaSID 2nd-Team includes Division III Virginia Wesleyan senior David Doino, Division III Christopher Newport junior Otho Hampton, Division II Virginia Union sophomore Darius Hargrove, Division II Virginia Union junior Luqman Jaaber, and USCAA Apprentice School senior Maze Toomer.

Randolph-Macon College sophomore Megan Silva has been selected as Player of the Year, and Eastern Mennonite University head coach Richard McElwee is the Coach of the Year, in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association for the 2004 College Division All-State Women's Basketball Team.

       

Silva, a 5-6 guard from Glen Allen, averaged 19.4 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 43% from the field and 67% at the free throw line.  She led the Yellow Jackets to a 20-8 record and the squad's second-straight trip to the ODAC Tournament finals.  For her efforts, Silva earned ODAC Player of the Year and All-ODAC 1st-Team honors.  She was also named to the D3hoops.com All-South Region and the ODAC Championships All-Tournament teams.  Silva has already surpassed 1,000 career points in just two seasons at Randolph-Macon.

       

McElwee led Eastern Mennonite to a 25-4 mark and into the sectional semifinals of the NCAA Division III National Tournament.  The Royals were this year's ODAC regular season champions and the league's tournament champions, marking the first time a head coach has won the tournament in his first season at the helm.
     

Joining Silva on the VaSID 1st-Team were Division III Christopher Newport senior Amber Hallman, NAIA Virginia-Wise freshman Sarah Helton, Division III Eastern Mennonite sophomore Laura Ludholtz, and Division II Longwood junior Marita Meldere.  Hallman averaged a double-double of 16.0 points along with 10.0 rebounds for the Captains (21-9).  Helton, the AAC freshman of the year, averaged 18.0 points and 8.7 rebounds for the Highland Cavaliers (15-15).  Ludholtz scored 16.0 points and grabbed 8.2 rebounds a game for the Royals.  Meldere, the 2003 VaSID player of the year, averaged a double-double of 16.6 points and 12.3 rebounds for the Lancers (17-9).  Silva and Meldere are repeat 1st-Team VaSID selections from a year ago.
    

The VaSID 2nd-Team includes USCAA Apprentice School senior Anita Allen, Eastern Mennonite sophomore Carrie Grandstaff, Division II Virginia Union senior Danielle Hoggard, Christopher Newport senior Tomorrow Lofton, and Division III Lynchburg senior Abby Pyzik.  Hoggard is a repeat 2nd-Team selection, while Allen earned 1st-Team honors last season.
