ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: February 28, 2011

MICHAEL HASLAM, Roanoke, Sophomore, Pitcher
Haslam, a sophomore from Collegeville, Pa., went 2-0 last week, posting a complete-game victory against Southern Vermont and a two-inning relief stint for the win against Maine-Presque Isle. Against Southern Vermont, Haslam allowed two runs on four hits while walking one and fanning nine over seven innings. Earlier in the week, he worked two scoreless innings to earn the win against M-PI. He gave up one hit and struck out two.

JACOB CLIFTON, Roanoke, Freshman, Utility
Clifton, a freshman from Vinton, Va., led the Maroons to four victories last week, including a three-game sweep of Southern Vermont over the weekend. Clifton had a hit in each of RC's five games, racking up a trio of multi-hit efforts. His best outing came in the week's final contest when Clifton went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a pair of doubles, a homer and three runs batted in. For the week, he hit .474 (9-for-19) with six runs, four doubles, a homer and seven RBI.

NOAH RATNER, Guilford College, Sophomore
Ratner, a sophomore from Asheville, N.C., shot 79-73-152 to place second among 55 golfers at the Old North State Invitational in New London, N.C. He bounced from 14th to second with his one-over-par 73 in Tuesday’s final round. Ratner's efforts helped Guilford place second in the eight-team field.

TYLER MIDWINTER, Randolph-Macon, Junior, Attack
Midwinter, a junior from Hamilton, Ontario, had six goals and three assists in a 2-0 week for R-MC. Midwinter opened the season with a pair of goals and an assist in R-MC’s 13-7 win over Wesley. Midwinter followed that with a four goal, two assist performance against Southwestern on Sunday in Ashland.

JEREMY BECHT, Washington and Lee, Junior, No. 2 Singles, No. 2 Doubles
Becht, a junior from Woodstock, Ga., helped lead the Generals to a 2-0 week with wins over Bridgewater (9-0) and 25th-ranked Salisbury (8-1). In the win over Bridgewater, he posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Brad DeWitt at No. 2 singles and teamed with junior Jonathan Gaffney to defeat DeWitt and Brent Floyd at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-4. In the win over Salisbury, Becht produced a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (3) win over David Lupinetti at No. 2 singles and teamed with Gaffney to defeat Lupinetti and Henry Stuhler at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. For the year, Becht is 6-3 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.

HEATHER LEWIS, Randolph-Macon, Sophomore, Pitcher
Lewis, sophomore from Glen Allen, Va., picked up four wins and a save during the Yellow Jackets six games this week. The southpaw allowed just one earned run in 21.2 innings in the circle. Lewis recorded key strikeouts late in R-MC’s extra inning games with Dickinson College which allowed Randolph-Macon to win in walk off fashion. For the week, she allowed just four runs (one earned) on 15 hits while fanning 17 and walking only three.

LISA SCRUGGS, Roanoke, Senior, DH/2nd Base
Scruggs, a senior from Lynchburg, Va., helped the Maroons to four victories over the past week by hitting .500 (11-for-22). She had four multi-hit games, including a pair of three-hit efforts. She went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and three RBI in the Maroons' 9-5 win over Wilson. She followed that up with a second 3-for-4 day with three more runs, a double, her second homer of the week, and four RBI in a 13-1 triumph over Methodist. For the week, she scored 10 runs to go with two doubles, two homers and 11 runs batted in.

WILTON MEGARGEL, Washington and Lee, Senior, Attack
Megargel, a senior from Charlottesville, Va., led the No. 15 Generals in a 2-0 week with wins over Sewanee and Stevenson. She led the team in scoring for both contests, finishing with five or more points in both games. Against Sewanee, Megargel finished with six goals and one assist while also winning one draw control as the Generals won the contest by a score of 21-13. She went on to score the game-winning goal with 18 seconds remaining in the game against Stevenson, helping W&L claim a 10-9 victory. Against the Mustangs, she finished with four goals and an assist, collected one ground ball and forced one turnover.

SARAH BUDRUS, Hollins, Senior, No. 2 Singles, No. 2 Doubles
Budrus, a senior from Huntington, W.Va., went 3-0 over the past week, including wins over a pair of ODAC squads. Competing at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, Budrus lost just 10 points between the two arenas, covering nine sets of play (six singles sets). She topped singles opponents from Mary Baldwin (6-0, 6-0), Emory & Henry (6-1, 6-0) and Guilford (6-3, 6-1). She won in doubles during each match, posting 8-0, 8-1 and 8-4 wins, respectively.
